Dunedin - Coastal Otago, New Zealand

  • Welcome

Dunedin is a historic university city that stretches around a long and beautiful harbour sheltered by the stunning Otago Peninsula.

Natural wonders abound on the Otago Peninsula, home to a colony of one of the world’s rarest penguins, the only mainland breeding colony of albatross, rare New Zealand sea lions and the magnificent Larnach Castle.

Exquisite examples of Victorian and Edwardian architecture punctuate a compact cityscape with a vibrant culture; reflected in an eclectic array of kerbside cafés, antique stores and boutique fashion designers and jewellers.

A world of fantastic recreational opportunities awaits you in Dunedin.

  • Dunedin’s Octagon

The Octagon is Dunedin's city centre, an eight sided plaza bisected by the city's main downtown street, George St. This unusual design was inspired by the city of Edinburgh in Scotland. The Octagon features two concentric streets, creating a ring of civil and public buildings around a central plaza.

  • Larnach Castle

Discover New Zealand’s only castle, built in 1871 by merchant baron and politician William Larnach for his beloved wife Eliza. It took over 200 workmen three years to build the castle shell and master European craftsmen spent a further 12 years completing the interior.

  • Yellow eyed penguin

In the 1980s research on the Otago Peninsula showed that the yellow-eyed penguin population had declined severely due to severe predation and loss of habitat and the yellow-eyed penguin was now considered to be an endangered species. This unique penguin is found only along New Zealands south islands’ eastern coastline, as far north as Banks Peninsula and as far south as Stewart Island and beyond to Campbell Island. So it was in 1987 that Dunedin conservationists formed the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust with the aim of saving the penguin by restoring coastal forest and controlling predators.

  • Bus
There is a range of bus services to Dunedin to suit your budget. Buses are very affordable and offer a relaxed, clean and flexible way to get to Dunedin from around the South Island. Close
  • Car
Driving to Dunedin from around the South Island is very common. Road conditions are excellent, with all major routes sealed and well signed. Petrol stations are easy to find, usually on the outskirts of small towns and towards the centre of most towns and cities. Traveling from Christchurch allowing for petrol stops should take around 5 hours, 4 hours from Queenstown and 2.5 hours from Invercargill. Close
  • Domestic Flight
There are daily domestic flights to and from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Rotorua in Dunedin, as well as a regular timetable of flights to and from Alexandra and Queenstown. The airport is an easy half an hour drive from the city centre. Close
  • Train
The Taieri Gorge Railway operates daily services connecting with coach services through to Queenstown. The scenic train journey takes you through the heart of historic Otago. The train crosses impressive viaducts constructed during the late 1800s. Tunnels, huge cliffs dropping away to the river below and the stark, almost unreal landscape makes this a very memorable journey indeed. Close
  • International Flight
Dunedin International Airport has international flights to and from Sydney and Brisbane, Australia allowing visitors traveling from, or through Australia to fly directly into Dunedin. Close

  • Bus
Convenient, efficient and affordable public bus services operate from the city to all suburbs and outlying centres. Coach services run daily to other areas in Otago, as well as Canterbury and Southland. Close
  • Bicycle
Being a reasonably hilly city, cycling won't suit everyone in Dunedin. If you live/study on the flat then cycling is very feasible, and if you live in a more hilly area and want the exercise, then cycling can still be a great option because you never need to travel far. Close
  • Walk
The peaceful paths and walkways leading into the city through the Town Belt provide an enjoyable start to the day. The central city area is compact and many students choose to walk to and from their study. Close
  • Car
Many students own cars in Dunedin. Dunedin has good inner city car parking. On the weekend, a trip to a secluded beach or picnic spot takes minutes, not hours. Close
  • Taxi
There are many taxis in Dunedin. A short taxi ride within the CBD could cost approximately NZ$15; and around NZ$45-60 between the CBD and airport. Close
