    Napier, the main centre, was rebuilt in art deco style after a devastating earthquake and fire destroyed it in 1931. Its stylish history is apparent throughout the city and is celebrated with an annual art deco festival.

    The region features more than 30 vineyards and a wine tour is a fun way to explore.

    Hawke’s Bay is home to a large mainland gannet colony, one of only two in the world.

    Hawkes Bay is home to over 150 vineyards and 90 wineries, and is New Zealand’s oldest wine region. Hawkes Bay is also a top fruit producing region and weekend farmers markets allow you to meet and buy from the growers directly.

  • Napier

    Far from the world's great population centres and from the European and American cities where 20th Century design evolved lies a small city that is unique. Napier, New Zealand, was rebuilt in the early 1930s following a massive earthquake. By the end of the decade, Napier was the newest city on the globe. Nowhere else can you see such a variety of buildings in the styles of the 1930s - Stripped Classical, Spanish Mission, and above all Art Deco, the style of the 20th Century - in such a concentrated area.

    Hawke's Bay enjoys the perfect outdoor environment for a selection of trekking, tramping, hiking and guided walks. Hawke's Bay walking tracks may be short walks, or multi-day walks. They may be public walking trails, or private guided walking tours.
