Southland, New Zealand

  • Welcome

Southlanders are well placed to make good use of their proximity to the snow resort Queenstown and the stunning Milford Sounds.

Southland’s main centre is Invercargill, New Zealand’s southern most city. Invercargill is a gateway to some of the south’s most cherished national parks, such as Stewart Island and Fiordland.

Along the Catlins Coast you can explore pristine rain forest and surf-lashed beaches. At Curio Bay is a forest of subtropical native trees that dates back to the Jurassic age, 135 to 190 million years ago. Seals and sea-lions are abundant.

  • Milford Sound

Milford Sound is a world-renowned natural wonder. Nowhere else in Fiordland do the mountains stand so tall, straight out of the sea. Luxuriant rainforest clings to sheer rock walls and waterfalls tumble hundreds of metres to the sea below.

  • Brown Spotted Kiwi on Stewart Island

Few visitors to New Zealand have the chance to see the Kiwi, New Zealand's iconic native bird, in nature. However, the Brown Spotted Kiwi has been making appearances on Stewart Island for over 20 years.

  • A café on Invercargill’s Esk Street

Invercargill is the southernmost and westernmost city in New Zealand, and one of the southernmost cities in the world. It is the commercial centre of the Southland region.
