The Bachelor of Art and Design (3D Animation & Visual Effects) is comprised of 3 years, all of which are broken down to provide comprehensive grounding & a detailed knowledge of the 3D Animation & Visual Effects creative industries. Ultimately preparing students for the industry, this degree spans foundation skills, character design, computer applications, 2D and 3D animation principles, production and finally a unique area of specialisation.

Foundation 3D: Modelling, Animation, and Rigging, Foundation 3D: Surfacing, Lighting and Visual Effects, Traditional Art and Design for 3D and Visual Effects, Digital Art I, Digital Art II, Modelling, Rendering and Compositing, Foundation Mini-Project, 3D Mini Production, Design Principles and Practice I

YEAR TWO
Video Productions, Preproduction, 3D Animation, Scripting and Dynamics, Design Principles and Practice II, Industry Procedures and Practice I, Electives (end of year 2, beginning of year 3), Advanced 3D Studies, Mini-Project, Rigging, Advanced 3D Technical Studies, or Advanced Character Animation, Mini-Project, Rigging, Advanced Creature Animation, or Motion Design Animation, Motion Design Production Techniques, Visual Effects 2D Compositing, Visual Effects 3D Compositing, Advanced Visual Effects Compositing

YEAR THREE
Team Production I, Team Production II, Advanced Individual Production, Industry Procedures and Practice II

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have at least 42 NCEA credits at Level 3 (with at least 2 subjects scoring a minimum of 14 credits) over a maximum of 4 subjects. A minimum of 12 NCEA credits must also be achieved at Level 2 English and 14 NCEA credits at Level 1 Mathematics. Candidates should ideally have a minimum of 24 credits at Level 3 NCEA Art, Design or Technology subjects,

  • or equivalent qualification of above for example Cambridge International Examinations,
  • or have successfully completed a Media Design School Qualification, Level 5 or higher.

Applicants 20 years or over may apply for entry through presentation of a professional portfolio and an interview.
For students who have English as a second language, a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 or equivalent is required.
