Southland offers a great environment for living and studying.
Southland Girls' High School was established as a day and boarding school in 1879 and has the proud tradition of offering an excellent academic education.
The school enrols up to1150 students from Yr7 - Yr13, who can choose from a wide range of subjects, cultural activities and sports. We expect most of our students to prepare for university or other tertiary education leading on to professional careers. We take a small number of international students who want to study hard, do well at school and learn to speak and write good English. They will enjoy the New Zealand way of life in a quiet, conservative part of the country. Students who want the more sophisticated attractions of big cities are advised to go elsewhere.
Academic Programme
Students may prepare for New Zealand public examinations and qualifications including University Entrance, Bursary and Scholarship. A full range of subjects is offered to senior levels and taught by experienced, specialist staff. Senior students may also study classes in the Senior College of Southland along with students from our brother school, Southland Boys' High School.
Extracurricular Programme
Girls may choose from over 30 sports. We have an excellent choir, orchestra and concert band and produce a musical drama with Southland Boys' High School. We provide specialist coaching and tuition for most sports and cultural activities.
English Language Entry Requirement
Please discuss English entry requirements with the school.
English Language Support
All international students receive ESOL tuition from a qualified teacher.
Academic Year
We follow the New Zealand four term year. Students may enrol at the beginning of any term.
Tuition Fees 2006
Tuition fees for 2006 are NZ$9500. Accommodation is NZ$175 per week.
Accommodation
Students may live as part of a carefully selected family or board at the school boarding house. Homestays will be available through the school holidays. International students are personally looked after and the school maintains regular contact with the host family. The student's care and safety are closely supervised by the school.
Facilities
The school is located centrally in the city of Invercargill which is a conservative provincial city close to famous tourist resorts. The school has modern facilities with science laboratories, drama, art and music rooms and specialist classrooms in all subject areas. There are excellent facilities for computer studies and information technology. Students are supported by a network of student services and international students receive individual assistance. Invercargill airport has daily flights to and from Auckland and Christchurch and is only a little over two hours by car from Otago University in Dunedin.
