Special Character

Wellington East Girls' College, established in 1925, is a traditional school for girls with a strong multicultural character. Cultural differences are celebrated and the individual needs of students are of the utmost importance.The college has a long record of high achievement and excellence in education and International Students have been welcomed for a number of years. The roll is currently about1040 students and up to30 International Students are accepted in total at all levels.

Location and Facilities

Overlooking the heart of Wellington city and harbour, the College is close to universities and to Wellington International Airport. The school complex set in gardens has a wide range of modern facilities in addition to its numerous well-equipped classrooms. These include a music suite, a drama suite, computer rooms, a technology suite, six science laboratories, seminar rooms, art and photography rooms, a well-equipped library and a large assembly hall. Sports facilities include a sports field, netball, basketball and tennis courts, swimming pool and two modern gymnasia.

Academic Programme

The College encourages girls to set high personal goals and to value learning, leading to distinguished performance in external examinations and at university. In 2009 our students excelled at Metit and Excellence levels of the NCEA, gaining 27 Scholarships. A wide range of subjects is offered across all disciplines, including Mathematics and Sciences, Languages and English, Art, Design, Graphics and Photography, Social Sciences, Commerce, Technology, Music, Drama and Physical Education along with practical subjects. The college is known for its particular strengths in Art, Design and Music.

Extracurricular Programme

Almost every sport, from tennis to indoor basketball can be played. Young Enterprise operates for girls to gain practical business experience. Drama productions, musical productions, computer clubs, debating, cultural groups and social services are also catered for. There are excellent choirs, an orchestra, a rock band and chamber music groups. Music is a strong feature of this college.

Student Welfare

The Director of International Students provides help and guidance with both school-related and personal aspects of the student's stay in New Zealand. This includes choice of subjects, orientation to a new school and a new environment, and arranging social evenings for International students and their host families.

Accommodation

Our Homestay Administrator arranges homestay accommodation with a local New Zealand family, meets new students at the airport and is available at the College to assist with any matters related to accommodation. A questionnaire is sent to the student prior to her arrival, so that her needs can best be provided for. Homestay families are expected to treat the international student as a family member, and to involve themselves in all aspects of her general welfare.

English Language Support

Intensive ESOL tuition by experienced qualified staff is available at all levels.In class support is provided in mainstream classes with specialist

vocabularies. At Years 12 and 13 students work towards gaining the English language entry requirements for university.

English Language Entry Requirements

It is preferable that students have at least a beginner's knowledge of English. Recent report copies should be sent with the application and all International students are tested on arrival and placed at a level at which they can best succeed.

Fees

Tuition fees for 2012 are NZ$14,000 with a NZ$200 application fee and a NZ$500 Administration and Pastoral Carefee. Homestay accommodationwillcost NZ$235 per week in 2012.
