The University of Waikato Foundation Studies
Foundation Studies is a full-time two semester programme to prepare students with English as an additional language for university study in New Zealand. A graduate of Foundation Studies has a university entrance qualification, the Certificate of Attainment in Foundation Studies, recognised by all New Zealand universities and is widely accepted by Australian universities. Foundation Studies students are university students and study on the beautiful University of Waikato Hamilton campus.
Waikato
The Waikato region has New Zealand’s longest river and its best surf break, Raglan.
The University was established in 1964 and occupies a park-like 64 hectare campus in the city of Hamilton. With a population of 125,000 Hamilton City is the fourth largest city in New Zealand.
It is close to some of the best adventure sports locations, beautiful coastlines, and picturesque parks and is only 90 minutes drive from Auckland. Hamilton City is built along the riverbanks of the Waikato River, which isthe longest in the country.
The Programme
In this pre-degree programme you will be taught subject contents and skills neededfor degreestudyin New Zealandand Australia. You will also gain confidence in using the English language. The subject content taught includes subject-specific knowledge, vocabulary and skills. The different subjects offered in the Foundation Studies programme are:
- Mathematics withCalculus;Mathematics withStatistics
- Accounting; Economics
- Biology;Chemistry; Physics
- Introduction to Social Sciences; Comparative Cultures; Psychology
- English 1 and 2 (compulsory); Language and Learning (compulsory)
The skills you will be taught include:
- Essay and report writing techniques
- Research and library skills
- Seminar presentation techniques
- Computer skills
- Group work

Programme Requirements
Students will study eight papers, four in each semester. There are three compulsory English Language papers and five optional papers.
Entry Requirements
A student must be 16 years of age or older, and have one of the following seconday school qualifications:
* completed secondary school study equivalent to New Zealand Year 12 or
* a secondary school completion qualification from your country of origin. (For a list visit www.waikato.ac.nz/language/foundation/)
* have one of the following English language requirements:
- an IELTS score of 5.5 or above with 5 in the writing band (and preferably at least 5 in each of the other three bands) or
- apaper-based TOEFL score above 490 (or a computer-based TOEFL score of 163 or above) or
- a successfully completed Level 6 Academic English at the University of Waikato
Students studying at Year 12 or 13 in a New Zealand secondary school and for whom English is an additional language are eligible to apply.

Tuition Fees
Tuition fees for 2008 are NZ$15,800.
