Doctoral degree is available in the specialisations of Composition, Musicology including Ethnomusicology and Performance. As part of the programme, a candidate is to submit for examination original and substantial work, consisting of not more than three pieces, each of which may be within any of the following classes: orchestral work, opera, work using vocal, keyboard or ensemble resources, presentation of Music Theatre, electronic music. Electronic resources may be included in work within these classes.
A candidate for this degree needs to apply through the Head of the Department of Music for registration and to both have completed the requirements for the Degree of Master of Music at the University of Auckland or an equivalent qualification approved by the Senate or its representative and demonstrate adequate training and ability to follow a course of advanced study in musical composition.
